Artist’s Information:

Herb Alpert (born March 31, 1935) was the founder and frontman for the instrumental group The Tijuana Brass. Yet his most notable achievment on the Billboard charts was as a solo artist. He is the only artist to hit #1 on a vocal track “This Guy’s In Love With You” and an instrumental, “Rise”. “Rise” was also sampled in the 1997 rap song “Hypnotize” by the late rapper Notorious B.I.G.

Alpert’s musical accomplishments include five number one hits, twenty-eight albums on the Billboard charts, eight Grammy Awards, fourteen Platinum albums and fifteen Gold albums. As of 1996, Alpert had sold 72 million albums worldwide.

He was also the founder, along with Jerry Moss, of the legendary, artist-oriented record label, A&M Records.

Song Information:

Rise is a 1979 album by Herb Alpert.
The Rise album was conceived in 1979 after the worldwide success of both the 7″ & 12″ version of the single “Rise,” which became a huge hit song on sales charts, radio, and in dance clubs throughout America, Europe, and Japan.

Alpert decided to construct Rise with one side consisting of originals, composed by him and his fellow writers; and another side consisting of cover versions of songs he admired. All songs featured Alpert in the lead on trumpet, but many fellow musicians helped him bring the songs to fruition in the studio.

Side One included the famous title track, plus “1980,” an instrumental theme which NBC Sports executive Don Ohlmeyer had commissioned for the network’s planned coverage of the Summer Olympics in Moscow. Side Two included a cover of “Street Life,” originally recorded by The Jazz Crusaders, a version of the Bill Withers song “Love Is” featuring Alpert’s vocals, as well as a dance rendition of Joaquín Rodrigo’s “Aranjuez” classical composition.
