Wouter “Wally” De Backer (born 21 May 1980 in Bruges, Belgium), better known by the stage name Gotye, is an indie pop/experimental singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in Victoria, Australia.

Backer was born in Belgium, but moved with his family to Melbourne, Australia when he was two. Originally a member of the indie band Downstares, Backer began performing under the name Gotye in 2001 when the band disbanded. Aside from his solo work, De Backer has been a member of the indie band The Basics since its formation in 2002.

Gotye’s second album Like Drawing Blood was featured by Triple J in May 2006 and was voted Number 1 in the listeners poll of the Best Album of 2006 . The album was also nominated for a J Award that year. Two tracks from that album, Learnalilgivinanlovin and Heart’s A Mess, were ranked 94 and 8 respectively in Triple J’s Hottest 100 for 2006. Like Drawing Blood has been certified Platinum.

“Somebody That I Used to Know” is a song written and recorded by Belgian-Australian singer and songwriter Gotye, featuring New Zealand singer Kimbra. The song was released in Australia and New Zealand by Eleven Music on 5 July 2011 as the second single from his third studio album, Making Mirrors (2011). It was later released by Universal Music in December 2011 in the United Kingdom, and in January 2012 in the United States. “Somebody That I Used to Know” was written and recorded by Gotye at his parent’s house on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria and is lyrically related to the experiences he has had with relationships.

Belgian born Wally De Backer is an Indie Rock singer-songwriter who records under the name of Gotye. He moved with his family to Australia at the age of 2 and has been releasing music there since 2001. De Backer achieved a breakthrough with his second album Like Drawing Blood, which was voted # in the Triple J listeners poll of the Best Album of 2006. This is the second single from De Backer’s third album, Making Mirrors. The LP was released in the summer of 2011 and went to #1 in Australia.

“Somebody That I Used to Know” is a mid-tempo indie pop ballad song. It samples Luiz Bonfá’s song “Seville” from his 1967 album Luiz Bonfa Plays Great Songs. The song received positive reception from most music critics, which noted the similarities between the song and works by Sting and American folk band Bon Iver, but said that it was crafted “for the music-buying masses”. It was also compared with Human League’s “Don’t You Want Me”. The song won the Triple J Hottest 100 poll at the end of 2011, as well as ARIA Awards for song of the year and best video, while Kimbra was voted best female artist and Gotye was named best male artist and producer of the year.
